Bill was a genuine polymath–and a genius. He could be prickly or endearing – or both. But never dull. It was a pleasure and privilege to share the position of New York Times stringer at Yale with Bill, dividing up the (Yale) world every morning, deciding who would cover what. He had a meteoric career at TIME and a great future ahead of him. We had lost touch for a while, but I was tremendously saddened to lose him as early as we did. A favorite quote of his from Oscar Wilde has stayed in my mind “All shells are made by living things.”
Surprised to see there were no comments about Bill Henry. I did not know Bill that well as a Berkeley classmate but did spend hours talking with him in the dining hall. He was one of the personalities that made the education at Yale great regardless of what you learned in class. He and the rest of the well-spoken English majors made us Philosophy majors think twice before starting a discussion. A sad premature loss for all of us.
