Commemorating Morse classmate Danny Horowitz

Ruth Jarmul writes:

"Amity Horowitz has given permission to share this Caring Bridge announcement of this very sad news about her husband Danny Horowitz; they were both Morse 1971.

"The below memorial notice appeared in today's (August 15, 2019) Washington Post. As Jesse (their son) mentioned, at the moment there are no plans for a service, but we'll be making donations in Danny's name to Washington to Washington (http://www.washingtontowashington.org), a camping adventure for inner-city kids — an organization that gave him great joy."

Daniel Horowitz
June 20, 1949 – August 11, 2019

A deeply loved (and loving) husband, father, son, and brother; a talented lawyer, teacher, cornhole competitor, and goofer-offer with a legendary laugh; and a man of steady intelligence, committed ethics, and gentle patience.

He negotiated international tax agreements in Kazakhstan, and he was robbed at gunpoint while driving a taxicab in Times Square. He accumulated loyal friends from first grade onwards, many who remained at his side until the very end. The first time he asked a girl on a date was on the final day of high school — and they spent the next 52 years together.

Danny’s clear-eyed courage was a reassurance and example to us all: his wife Amity, sons Jesse and Eli, daughter-in-law Rachel, sister Debby, and parents Larry and Shirley.

A truly, truly, truly good guy.

Help with Outreach for Reunion 2016!

JeanBrenner2Y71 Needs You!  Jean Brenner, co-chair of our 45th reunion, sends this plea:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Harry Levitt (HLevitt@mackfinancial.com) and Ken Westerman (kenneth.r.westerman@gmail.com) have agreed to head up the attendance-building team for our 45th reunion. The plan is to have a team of people from each college make personal contact with all our other classmates in that college (initially via email, to be followed up with a phone call) to encourage attendance.

Each college team would have one or more captains, who would be responsible for recruiting others to participate in the outreach effort, so that no individual would have to contact more than about 8 to 10 people. Each captain would also be expected to keep track of the status of the outreach efforts by his/her team.

If you’d like to participate, please contact Harry or Ken, specifying your college and whether you’d like to be a team captain as well. You’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve done your part to make the reunion a success! Thanks!

Catherine Ross Speaks in DC on "How Schools and Courts Subvert Students' First Amendment Rights" Nov. 9

Catherine-Ross-Lessons-in-Censorship-2Catherine Ross has a new book out on students and the First Amendment. Classmates and friends are cordially invited to attend the launch party in DC on November 9:

Author and law professor Catherine Ross discusses her new book “Lessons in Censorship: How Schools and Courts Subvert Students’ First Amendment Rights,” which explores the state of free speech for students in America’s public schools.

The book documents an increasing clamp-down on speech even off-campus, and explores how even well-intentioned efforts against bullying and hate speech violate students’ rights.

Ross, a professor at George Washington University Law School, is spending the 2015-2016 academic year as a visiting scholar at the Harvard School of Education. She has been a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale and other universities. She is a co-author of “Contemporary Family Law,” a leading law school text.
